I've never been that enthusiastic about Instagram challenges. I find them a bit 'exhibitionistic' (yes, I did use that word). People are exposing unique parts of themselves that would normally be for them. Private. Personal. You share not only your photos but also interests, thoughts, past experiences, epiphanies, often friends, your home, even your own pets.
On the other hand, I do admire people who take part in the challenges or even organise them. Mainly their bravery. As a friend of mine pointed out, snapping pics isn't just about bragging or showing off your wardrobe. Challenges helped him to master poses that he was struggling with by looking at the alignment of his body. He also treated every picture as a piece of art; thinking about composition, light and even the special effects that are possible with Instagram. It was also an opportunity to connect with new people with similar interests.
So, I swallowed my pride and had a go. This challenge was hosted by one of my most inspirational friends. He designed a 10 day yoga challenge based on variations for practitioners at different levels. He carefully designed each day to make us think about how we felt in each pose and force us to take the time to connect with the body and the breath.
The best pictures were the ones where people responded creativity to the challenge. The ones that demonstrated the emotions behind each pose; where you didn’t need to read the description. I was stunned by how many ways the variations given could be interpreted. Most importantly, it was so much fun! It meant that I had to allocate another ten minutes each day to my yoga, despite my busy lifestyle - playing, twisting, stretching, breathing, feeling.
Ok, I think I might have revealed more of myself than I’d intended. It was hard work keeping it going for ten days. Looking back, I should have given more thought to my yoga clothing!
But, I’ve learned new things about my body and practice. I’ve proved to myself that, when I want to, I can find 10 minutes for some yoga madness. Overall, I had fun! You might not be that enthusiastic about Instagram challenges, but, if you pick the right one, it might just be worth it…!
